The satirical genius with which Clair describes the Hairy Man seems to quest that the man may devote been mentally insane and unsettled but as a child she was naïve and oblivious to this possibility. Clair also uses irony to pomposity her naïve and oblivious childhood. In lines 64-65 Clair explains that her mother threatened the children if they so much as looked at fireworks again due to her cousins previous retch that summer.

This exhibits some verbal irony because although her mother is referring to looking at the fireworks and thinking about employ them, the reason her cousin was ill-treat was because he was hit in the eye when they were shooting off the cherry bomb. Another guinea pig of irony in Clairs recollection is in lines 42-48 where she describes the puzzle out of retrieving the cigar box with her private things from the closet.
